Description of Project:

In order to improve the road based public transport system, the proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project will restructure the main urban transport corridor from Dhaka’s International Airport to Gazipur through a dedicated BRT route. The BRT project components are: 20km dedicated BRT Main Corridor, including flyover, stations, local roads, drainage & associated structures; two mixed-traffic lanes and one non-motorized traffic (NMT) lane per direction and sidewalks; improvement of 141 access feeder roads in favor of NMT; an efficient high-capacity drainage system all along the BRT corridor; 4.5km Elevated Section between Abdullahpur and Tongi; and a BRT terminal and bus depot in Gazipur.

 

The BRT project is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and jointly implemented by the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) and Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). The BRT Main Corridor Component includes Gazipur to Airport Main Corridor Route, including flyover and BRT stations; and Roads and Highways Department (RHD) is the Implementing Agency of the proposed BRT Main Corridor project.

 

Description of Actual Services Provided by Staff of this Firm in the Assignment:

 

Services included:

§ Environmental monitoring of various issues due to project activities, such as, environmental pollution (dust, noise, and water); issues as listed in the EMP; provision of safe water, sanitary toilet facility and hygienic accommodation for workers at camp sites; provision of adequate occupational health, safety, and fire safety facilities; flora & fauna; waste management system; drainage system & vegetation.

§ Carry out environmental quality monitoring sampling and testing.

§ Conduct ambient air quality monitoring for 8 hours duration each at three locations and carry out testing of defined parameters, such as H2S, Sulfur Dioxide (SOx), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Carbon Monoxide (CO), O3, O2, CO2, TVOC, Air Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), Particulate Matter (PM10), Humidity, Wind direction, Wind speed, Temperature.

§ Air quality monitoring conducted single (1) time for baseline environmental quality monitoring and five (5) times on half yearly basis for environmental quality monitoring. Laboratory test by JV DSCL-HOPE at in-house laboratory or at site by field testing kit.

§ Collection of surface water samples from two locations and carry out testing of defined parameters, such as Temperature, Turbidity, pH, TDS, EC, TSS, Fe, NH3–N, As, Fe, Mn, DO, COD, BOD5, TC, FC, Total N, Total P.

§ Surface water quality monitoring conducted single (1) time for baseline environmental quality monitoring and five (5) times on half yearly basis for environmental quality monitoring. Laboratory tests at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) laboratory and Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) laboratory; and some by JV DSCL-HOPE at in-house laboratory or at site by field testing kits.

§ Collection of groundwater samples from three locations and carry out testing of defined parameters, such as Temperature, Turbidity, pH, TDS, EC, TSS, Fe, NH3–N, As, Fe, Mn, DO, COD, BOD5, TC, FC, Total N, Total P.

§ Groundwater quality monitoring conducted single (1) time for baseline environmental quality monitoring and five (5) times on half yearly basis for environmental quality monitoring. Laboratory tests at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) laboratory and Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) laboratory; and some by JV DSCL-HOPE at in-house laboratory or at site by field testing kits.

§ Carry out ambient noise level measurement at six locations during the day and night-time (15 minutes duration in each time).

§ Noise level measurement conducted single (1) time for baseline environmental quality monitoring and five (5) times on half yearly basis for environmental quality monitoring. Laboratory test by JV DSCL-HOPE at in-house laboratory or at site by field testing kit.

§ Collection of soil samples from two locations and carry out testing of defined parameters, such as pH, As, Pb, Hg, Cd, Cr, Zn.

§ Soil quality monitoring conducted single (1) time for baseline environmental quality monitoring and five (5) times on half yearly basis for environmental quality monitoring. Laboratory tests at Dhaka University (DU) laboratory and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) laboratory; and some by JV DSCL-HOPE at in-house laboratory or at site by field testing kits.

§ Analysis of environmental quality sampling test results.

§ Preparation of Baseline Environmental Quality Monitoring Report and Environmental Quality Monitoring Report at the end of every time, including the analysis result of surface & ground water quality testing, air quality monitoring, soil quality monitoring, and noise level measurement.

§ Liaison with Client for project activities, reports & invoices submission and follow up payment.
