Project Name:

Consultancy Services for Environmental Monitoring and Quality Test for Installation of Two (02) Town Bordering Station (TBS) and One (01) Metering Station Under Construction of Chittagong-Feni-Bakrabad Gas Transmission Parallel Pipeline Project

Country:  Bangladesh
Project Duration: 01/2020 to 11/2021
Description of Project:

Natural gas is a significant source of commercial energy in Bangladesh and is the prime mover of its national economy. There is a growing demand for a steady and reliable supply of natural gas in the Southeast region to support its industrialization and commercial developments. The Government of Bangladesh (GoB) has recognized this need and considers it a priority to expand the gas transmission capacity in this region. The growing demand for natural gas by the industrial centrist in Chittagong, Noakhali, Comilla and adjoining areas is not sustained by the Gas Transmission Company Limited (GTCL). At present, the existing Chittagong Bakhrabad gas transmission pipeline is not adequate to meet the supply of gas for distribution in this region. The Project aims to increase the contribution of the energy sector to sustainable economic growth by financing the improvement of efficiency in gas production from existing gas field, and expansion of transmission pipeline capacity through construction of gas transmission pipelines.

DSCL was engaged to conduct Baseline Environmental Quality Monitoring and Safeguard Monitoring for single (1) time immediately after project commencement; regular environmental quality monitoring and safeguard monitoring throughout the 12 months construction period on quarterly basis (every 3 months) for 04 times; monitor the environmental safeguards of the project area; monitor the occupational and public health & safety in & around the project area; monitor the environmental pollution in the project area due to the construction activities; and accordingly preparation of one (1) Baseline Environmental Quality and Safeguard Monitoring Report and 04 Environmental Quality and Safeguard Monitoring Report at the end of every time.

The environmental quality monitoring activities included: liquid water sampling & quality testing, groundwater sampling & quality testing, ambient air quality monitoring (2 hours duration), ambient noise level measurement, The environmental quality monitoring scope was according to the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) as included in the technical specifications of the Civil Works Contract. The sampling locations was specified by the clients
